Printmaking can be seen as the birth of graphic design imagery in that it was the first way to make images available to a mass market. Relief prints and etchings are some of the oldest forms, the latter medium in my opinion being pushing into the pinnacle of a print’s ability to represent relevant subject matter. While the relief prints of the Japanese, with their genius coloring and inspiring point of view, sparked a revolution in the modern mind.
